‘uxplore’ is a £3.8m game-changing, part ERDF funded, connectivity initiative which provides support for Coventry & Warwickshire SMEs in the form of workshops, grants and mentoring. It will also establish a Digital Hub with 5G networks to allow SMEs to work, collaborate and test products.

About Us

'uxplore' is a £3.8m game-changing connectivity initiative which establishes a Digital Connectivity Demonstrator in Coventry & Warwickshire.

It is designed to help SMEs adopt and harness the benefits of digital connectivity with a sharp focus on future demand and development.

The project is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and is being delivered by Coventry University, in conjunction with the wider CU group, in partnership with Coventry & Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) Growth Hub and Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce.

Coventry University will work with a range of business partners across Coventry and Warwickshire to help boost innovation and generate economic benefits including productivity, business growth and job creation.

Running up until 30 June 2023, uxplore aims to support SMEs by providing a range of physical and virtual services through a network of activities across the region, and increase the development of new digital products and services, enabled by broadband, 4G, Wi-Fi and 5G.

There will be four distinct workstreams within the project:

1. 5G Grants

5G grants are available to support proof of concept activities for the development of innovative products, services and processes that will create opportunities utilising 5G technologies and connectivity.

The match-funded revenue grants are available for SMEs to fund up to 50% of projects with a value of between £4,000 and £10,000.

The objective of the grant is to fund SME investment in innovation and external proof of concept type activity like creating products and services that are new to the business or new to the market.

2. New Business Mentoring

Enterprises who have been registered for less than 12 months will be supported to drive their business forwards. 12 hours of customised support and mentoring will be provided to exploit the latest technologies to drive innovation and business performance. Young businesses with ideas for technical products or services will receive support to commercialise their concepts, through a combination of diagnostic assessment and a tailored programme of development.

3. Connectivity & Frontier Technology Workshop Programme

SMEs can apply to attend a two-day workshop, where they will gain the required knowledge of the technology fundamentals, identify potential to enhance current practices, and enable new developments in business models. Through a combination of workshops, industry case studies and structured development activities, uxplore will help participating businesses realise the potential for digital technologies to drive their business forward.

4. Digital Hub with 5G Technical Mentoring

Technical mentoring will be provided by a leading mobile network operator, within a Digital Hub, ready Autumn 2021. A c150m2 space will be refurbished on Coventry University Technology Park, to include state of the art communications infrastructure, co-working and “collaboration spaces”, a technical development area/demonstration space, and access to conference/meeting rooms. The Hub will help innovative businesses develop and grow, allow Coventry & Warwickshire-based SMEs to benefit from mobile wireless communications and provide space to test and explore new applications of 5G through the use of the 5G demonstrator equipment.
