David Boyd
Director of the Centre for Environment and Society Research at Birmingham City University
David Boyd is Professor of Construction and Director of the Centre for Environment and Society Research, based at the School of Engineering and the Built Environment. He teaches on the MSc Construction Project Management course. David has a background in engineering, but is better known for his management insights of the industry. He has researched and designed solar heating schemes for housing estates, as well as developing a model of projects in the industry as complex adaptive sociotechnical systems. He has completed research on construction clients, which was then published as a book and adopted by the Construction Clients’ Group. David joined the University in 1987, originally working as a Senior Lecturer at the Birmingham School of Architecture. Prior to this, he worked as a Research Fellow and assistant at the Polytechnic of Central London (now the University of Westminster) and Kingston Polytechnic (now Kingston University), respectively.
Tony Hopkin
Head of Construction, Quality & Innovation at Midland Heart
Dr Tony Hopkin BSc (hons) MSc EngD CEng C. Build E FCABE FCIOB. I am a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Construction Manager, Chartered Building Engineer and a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers and the Chartered Institute of Building. I currently work as Midland Heart’s Head of Construction and Quality. I believe that construction quality is a crucial, but often overlooked area. I have nearly 10 years of experience in construction quality, defects; and, learning for continuous improvement having worked in various claims roles, as a General Manager, Visiting Lecturer, Technical Manager, Quality Manager, and Head of Construction and Quality. In addition, I researched defects for my doctorate: where I developed an innovative method of learning from defects and managed change in organisations which guided housing associations and housebuilders to improve their quality. I have published on the subject of construction quality and defects in leading journals, have spoken at a number of national and international conferences, lectured on the topic at several leading universities, provided CPD seminars for professional bodies, worked with manufacturers to improve products; and, sit on a number of industry groups.
